PTEN (phosphatase and tensin homolog) is a phosphatidylinositol-3,4,5-triphosphate 3-phosphatase that has been identified as a tumor suppressor. PTEN is a dual specificity tyrosine and serine/threonine phosphatase that preferentially dephosphorylates phosphoinositide substrates and negatively regulates the AKT/PKB signaling pathway. Through its action, PTEN has been shown to modulate cell cycle progression, cell survival, cell migration, cell adhesion, and insulin signaling. PTEN is also known as mutated in multiple advanced cancers 1, MMAC1, TEP1, BZS, MHAM, and MGC11227.
