Cytokines

Cytokines are signaling proteins in cellular communication. While hormones are secreted from specific organs to the blood, and neurotransmitters are related to neural activity, the cytokines are a more diverse class of compounds in terms of origin and purpose. They are produced by a wide variety of hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic cell types and can have autocrine, paracrine and endocrine effects, sometimes strongly dependent on the presence of other chemicals. The cytokine family consists mainly of smaller, water-soluble proteins and glycoproteins with a mass between 8 and 30 kDa.

The term cytokine is used generically for interleukins, chemokines, growth factors, neurotrophins and similar extracellular proteinaceous ligands (lymphokines, monokines, interferons, colony-stimulating factors, immunomodulators, immunotransmitters, etc.).

Cytokines can be isolated from natural sources or are recombinant and produced in bacteria, yeast or higher eukaryotic cells. Wheras bacterially expressed ones lack post-translational modifications, the latter are glycoproteins. In many assays non-glycosylated cytokines show a similar activity as glycosylated ones, for some studies glycosylation is important.

Biorisk-free Cytokines

Biomol now offers ORF Genetics\' biorisk-free cytokines. Whereas other cytokines claimed to be endotoxon-free contain about 1 EU/µg, ORF Genetics biorisk-free cytokines contain less than 0.05 EU/µg. One EU is approximately equivalent to 100 pg of E. coli lipopolysaccharide—the amount present in around 100 bacteria. Detailed information: Biorisk-free Cytokines.
