 A heterocyclic antidepressant that inhibits the re-uptake of serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine. Venlafaxine is a dual serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI). It inhibits the serotonin transporter at 30-fold lower concentration than the norepinephrine transporter (Ki=0.082 and 2.480 µM respectively). Venlafaxine displays differential effects on norepinephrine reuptake in healthy versus depressed patients. So it is a clinically useful antidepressant.
